I’m currently reading James Michener’s “The Bridge at Andau”. It reads similarly to Orwell’s “1984”, only it’s true. The people of Hungary, post WWII and under the occupation of Russian troops, lived in constant fear. Michener shares, “The number of men and women I have met who were betrayed into weeks of brutal AVO (secret police) treatment by intimate friends was a constant shock to me. In fact, this studied tearing down of the fabric of normal society was perhaps their outstanding contribution to Hungarian life. Their goal was to incriminate every living Hungarian, and many of the dead. When everyone was incriminated, then any normal social relationship was impossible…”
The majority of Hungarians who endured brutality at the hands of the Russians are no longer alive, but the generational trauma continues in ways unrealized by most. If the parents and grandparents of those living today were raised in a void which lacked normal social relationships, what happens to future generations? The good news is there is One who can heal them. His name is Jesus.
Just days before my good friend returned to the mission field in Hungary, she agreed to join me for a podcast interview. Listen in on our coffee date as Tahran Olson shares a bit about life in Hungary, life as a missionary, and how we can shine for Jesus right where we are!
